The World of Television

        Most kids plug into the world of television long before they enter school. As kids get older, too much screen time can interfere with activities such as being physically active, reading, doing homework, playing with friends, and spending time with family. Of course, TV in moderation can be a good thing: Preschoolers can get help learning the alphabet on public television, grade schoolers can learn about wildlife on nature shows, and parents can keep up with current events on the evening news. No doubt about it — TV can be an excellent educator and entertainer.
        Despite it's advantages television can still be detrimental. Children who spend several hours watching TV are likely to be overweight. Children who view violent acts are more likely to show aggressive behavior but also fear that the world is scary and that something bad will happen to them. This is why it is so important for you to monitor the content of TV programming and set viewing limits to ensure that your kids don't spend too much time parked in front of the TV.

Memoir


As a child I grew up watching a lot of television, playing video games and associating with many other children my age.  I always woke up early mornings ready for breakfast and cartoons.  The first action I took after stepping foot from my queen size bed was making a large bowl of fruit loops.  Once I had my cereal I sat directly in front of the television and turned to Barney.  Barney was my favorite show to watch.  He was the nicest dinosaur in the world.  He taught me many basic skills that I know today.  The songs Barney sang on his show had the best jingles and were easy to remember. His theme song was one of my favorites and it was-

He also had an alphabet song that was to die for that is still in my head currently. The song was-

Barney had friends that I thought I should have growing up.  They always helped him with his rights and wrongs in life.  Barney and his friends were always a team.  It’s hard to find things like that in this current generation. There are more children fighting in the community than children building friendships.

            Although it seems that everyone is influenced by entertainment, I’m convinced that children in this current generation are influenced negatively by it. Children are not interacting with the same entertainment from the 90s.  The popular media is more negative than positive.  Paying close attention to details, actions, and characters in most movies, shows, cartoons, and games will show that a lot of them shouldn’t be watched or played by children.

            Many cartoon shows are cursing, showing body parts, and displaying ignorant behavior.  There are two cartoon shows I know for a fact that does this. Those shows are Family Guy and American Dad. Characters in these cartoons are fighting, killing, showing sexual behavior, and talking with no sense at all.  This type of behavior influences kids because many of them either look up to cartoon characters or like them enough to want to do the exact things they do.  I can vouch so accurately on this because I have a younger brother and sister. My brother name is Keith and he is five years old. Keith is one of those kids who repeat and act on all the things that he some-what know is bad. After realizing that something could be bad he asks older people about what he has learned and consistently acts on it even after being told that it is bad. This really does bother me because if he knows better I expect him not to do it. On the other hand, my sister Kimberly who is ten years old tries to hide anything that she know is negative and only does negative things when my parents or myself aren’t around. She is extremely sneaky and believes in having fun.  Both brother and sister have been influenced in some type of way.

            My brother is younger than my sister so his influence came strictly from cartoons.  He is always the first person to wake up in the house so the television is his first move in the morning.  My brother does not take the same actions I took when I was his age which made us limit the amount and the cartoons that he is able to watch.  He would rather watch something funny than educational.  His favorite show is “Spongebob Squarepants” which is nothing educational at all.

            Spongebob is an annoying character. He sings this jingle that only says, “I’m ready, I’m Ready I’m Ready” every day before he goes to work.  He has a voice that can make you go insane.  Every action he takes is never thought out.  He is always acting as if he has no intelligence.  Spongebob has a best-friend name Patrick who is completely stupid.  Patrick is a starfish.  Both Patrick and Spongebob live in objects that humans cannot stay in.  Patrick stays under a rock while Spongebob is in a pineapple, living with objects we use on a day to day basis. 

            My brother grew up for a while thinking that Spongebob was real.  He also thought that the way they acted and the things they did were things he should learn.  This was a problem for me and my parents because we were clueless on where he picked it up from until we watched him more. Everything that he was watching had him doing dangerous things, such as jumping off furniture and fighting.

            If one cartoon could influence my brother I can just imagine how many children are being influenced every day.  There are millions of children and cartoons around the world that could influence children negatively. I don’t disagree with cartoons but I do disagree with what they are displaying. Cartoons are what interest children but if every cartoon, movie, and show is going to be negative than it serves no purpose for my siblings or any other child. I’m aware that there is still an educational channel such as PBS but my brother is nowhere near interested in PBS because it’s not something that attracts him. My siblings would rather give channels that they see on a regular basis their time which is Nickelodeon, Cartoonnetwork, Boomerang, etc.

            Although television is not the only negative impact it is very common. Our generation today is based off popularity so kids would like to watch and play what other kids are playing and watching.  My siblings make sure that it is known every day that they would only like the latest movies that are out and they try to refuse to miss any new episodes of their choice on shows that they like. There are rarely any games or shows educational enough to attract the attention of the their young mind.  There’s nothing wrong with funny shows being silly but there is something wrong with having no educational entertainment.  Education can always be interesting or fun in a way.  Better games and shows will definitely improve the generation of today.
